Education Pathways for Navy Servicemembers

Education at Sea

Flexibility is critical for all servicemembers pursuing education. Due to limited Internet connections onboard Navy vessels, it can be even more challenging for sailors. Purdue Global programs provide the flexibility to put your education on hold if you are deployed without access to an Internet connection.

If you wish to study at Purdue Global while deployed, note that attendance in weekly seminars, participation in online discussion groups, and posting of weekly assignments is required. Therefore, please make sure to discuss your upcoming duty assignments with your Admissions Advisor before enrolling.

The PME2Degree® program is a holistic approach to providing the best education option based on individual goals and the most efficient path to achieve those goals.

Transfer Credit Pathways

We have mapped a select few Navy ratings into various degree options, allowing you to pursue a degree program that may not specifically be related to your rating but is relevant to your ultimate career goals. In addition, we will review your military transcript for potential credit toward your degree of choice.

Uncompromised Quality

The comprehensive nature of our Navy rating reviews ensures that the required outcomes needed to earn a college degree are achieved either in military service or through the degree plan.

Navy Education Benefits and Tuition Assistance

Tuition Assistance (TA)
Tuition Assistance (TA)

What Is Tuition Assistance?

Tuition assistance is a benefit paid to eligible servicemembers who meet specific requirements to receive TA benefits.

TA is the Navy's educational financial assistance program. It provides active-duty sailors with funding for tuition costs associated with courses taken in an off-duty status at a college, university, or vocational/technical institution, whose regional or national accreditation is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Purdue Global is a regionally accredited institution.

TA Caps
TA Caps

What Are the Caps?

In accordance with ALNAV 004/21, effective October 1, 2021, there is an annual cap of $4,500 per individual, which falls within each fiscal year (October 1 to September 30). This fiscal year cap applies to both TA and NCPACE DL combined. Payment for tuition will not exceed the following caps:

  • $250.00 per semester hour
  • $166.67 per quarter hour
  • 18 semester hours (27 quarter credit hours) of TA-funded courses per fiscal year

Purdue Global is on the quarter-hour system. Current servicemembers, including Guard and Reserve, are eligible for a 55% per-credit tuition reduction for undergraduate programs, and a 30% tuition reduction on graduate programs (except DNP).

TA Eligibility
TA Eligibility

Who Is Eligible?

TA is available to:

  • Active-duty sailors with a minimum of 3 years of service
  • Enlisted Naval Reservists ordered to active duty for 120 days or more
  • Naval Reserve Officers ordered to active duty for 2 years beyond the course term end date
  • Sailors with 6 months or more on their Navy contract

Navy TA can be requested up to 7 days out from the term start date.

To qualify, you must:

  • Be on active duty for the duration of the course term.
  • Receive counseling from a Navy College Education Counselor [Navy College Office or the Virtual Education Center (VEC)].
  • Provide grades from all previous TA-funded courses and reimburse all collectable grades. (Withdrawals for involuntary reasons may be granted an indebtedness waiver.)
  • If an officer, agree to remain on active duty for at least 2 years upon completion of the course(s) term end date. This obligation runs concurrently with remaining obligated service time. If you do not complete the required service obligation, you must repay the TA funds expended on your behalf during the last 2 years of active duty on a prorated basis.
TA Coverage
TA Coverage

What Is Covered?

NAVADMIN 214/21 provides a new list of eligibility requirement for TA/NCPACE participants. For questions regarding eligibility, degree plans, or other education funding options, contact the NCVEC at 877-838-1659.

TA will cover only tuition and pays for both classroom and independent study/distance learning courses.

TA does NOT cover books and course materials, academic institution fees, flight training fees, or retakes of the same course. Additionally, TA will not fund your courses if you leave the service before the course ends, you quit the course for reasons other than personal illness, military transfer, or mission requirements, or you fail the course. In the event one of these situations occurs, you will have to provide reimbursement for any funds already paid.

My Education/WebTA
My Education/WebTA

What Is My Education/WebTA?

My Education is the central portal for Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard TA processing. A servicemember submits a WebTA application via the My Education portal each time TA is requested for a specific term. Each service branch authorizes their respective WebTA applications. For sailors, the My Education portal is accessed through the Navy College Program website. Please read all pertinent NAVADMINs for the most up-to-date information.
